Virgin Camp
By Cynthia Jimenez-Hicks and Cameron Kneteman家雯
In development with fu-GEN since 2025
Virgin Camp – It’s horrifying. It’s hilarious. It’s holy. Think Joseph Kahn directs a musical in a megachurch basement after ten tabs of acid. Hyper-stylized. Explosive. Genre-bending. Uncompromising. A gospel of glitter and grief, Virgin Camp is not just a musical — it’s a ritual. A drag baptism. A hip-pop prayer. A campy crucifixion of everything we were taught to revere. At its core, Virgin Camp asks: What happens when you’ve been taught to kill the woman inside you — and she refuses to die?
Aging Youth Gang
By Norman Yeung
In development with fu-GEN since 2024
A trio of senior citizens are none too pleased with yet another hipster coffee shop gentrifying their Chinatown, so they deal with the business the best way they know how: Sabotage!
A poignant and funny intergenerational story about legacy, community, and the fear of being forgotten, this play deals with the complexities behind gentrification of neighborhoods that immigrants built as pockets of home.
twice blessed
By Marissa Orjalo
In development with fu-GEN since 2022
Based on the St. Louis World Fair of 1904 where over 1,000 Filipinos were imported to America to be featured in a human zoo, we follow the story of two Filipina women and one Filipina girl lost to its history who remain buried 13,000 kilometres away from home.
twice blessed is an oddly absurdist, Beckett-like story. With a stage covered in soil and a god eating dog, these three characters find family and joy in one another among their simulacrum of home.
fu-GEN Theatre’s Annual
Kitchen Potluck
Kitchen Potluck started long before fu-GEN was even a thing (we’re talking pre-2002!). Back then, we’d gather in friends' kitchens, swap stories, share our works-in-progress, and—of course—eat some amazing food. And guess what? We’re still doing it today! Kitchen Potluck is our annual celebration of new Asian Canadian plays-in-the-making, where we gather, get cozy, and read excerpts from works-in-progress by our Kitchen Cohort Playwrights. These playwrights have been hard at work all year, and now it’s time for them to shine!
Think of Kitchen Potluck as a creative jam session for new playwrights. Playwrights get the chance over the year to workshop their plays with actors and a dramaturg—then gather again in June to read some excerpts to an audience. It’s the perfect opportunity to see parts of their play come to life, get feedback from the audience, and bask in the energy of the creative community.
This is fu-GEN’s ultimate event of the season. Over the years, hundreds of artists have been shaped by Kitchen Potluck, and it's become our go-to moment for bringing everyone together to celebrate the rich, diverse voices and stories that make the Canadian theatre scene so unique.
